Renault has officially revealed the production version of the highly anticipated R5 Turbo 3E, a modern interpretation of the classic R5 Turbo I and II from the ’80s and the Clio V6 from the ’00s. The R5 Turbo 3E, which rides on a bespoke platform, boasts a fully electric rear-wheel drive (RWD) powertrain generating over 500 horsepower.
The R5 Turbo 3E takes retro-futuristic styling to the next level, combining the signature boxy fender flares of the original R5 Turbo with oversized wheels wrapped in ultra-wide tires. While the design retains much of the iconic look, it has been modernized with a sleeker greenhouse and updated aerodynamics.
The bold white bumpers and side skirts contrast strikingly with the yellow bodywork and black roof. Modern touches include LED headlights inspired by the classic R5 and taillights sourced from the new R5 E-Tech Electric. The charging port is cleverly integrated into one of the side intakes, designed to cool the electric powertrain.
Mechanically, the R5 Turbo 3E diverges from the standard Renault 5. Instead, it rides on a bespoke carbon monocoque chassis, known for being both lightweight and exceptionally stiff. The electric powertrain consists of two motors mounted on the rear wheels, providing a combined output of over 500 hp (373 kW / 507 PS). This makes the R5 Turbo 3E the most powerful production model from Renault, with a claimed 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of under 3.5 seconds.
Luca de Meo, Renault Group CEO, described the R5 Turbo 3E as a car “only for the brave,” promising an exhilarating driving experience. The car showcases the company’s engineering expertise, with some speculating that Alpine’s involvement in the development hints at the project’s performance focus. While Renault has not yet disclosed details about the production model’s availability or pricing, it is expected to launch in 2026. Given the bespoke nature of the car, the R5 Turbo 3E will likely be offered in limited numbers at a premium price.
Renault offered an exclusive look at the R5 Turbo 3E in the “Anatomy of a Comeback” documentary series available on Prime Video. The reveal, which took place in the company’s design center, was hosted by Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo, Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive, and Vice President of Renault Design Gilles Vidal.
