The Swedish transport authority Skånetrafiken has awarded public transport provider Nobina a twelve-year contract to operate and expand bus services in Malmö, starting in June 2027. As part of the agreement, Nobina has committed to electrifying 95 percent of its 300 buses operating in the city by 2027, with the remaining vehicles transitioning to electric power in the following years.
The contract also includes plans for Nobina to build two new depots, which are expected to be operational by the start of the contract. Additionally, the company will continue to expand the “MalmöExpressen” lines, where Van Hool electric buses, each around 24 meters in length, currently serve passengers.
Nobina, which has been procuring electric buses since 2017, has already incorporated several electric bus models from manufacturers such as Volvo and MAN, and most recently ordered 18 articulated electric buses from Solaris this summer.
Martin Pagrotsky, Managing Director of Nobina Sweden, expressed enthusiasm about the new contract, saying, “We are delighted to have been awarded this new contract in Malmö. Together with Skånetrafiken, we can further expand and improve public transportation for the residents of Malmö. We look forward to building on the current strong ridership growth and welcoming even more satisfied travellers.” Nobina, the largest public transport company in Scandinavia, operates across Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland and employs around 13,000 people.
