Tesla and Rivian are nearing a settlement in a four-year legal dispute, with Tesla accusing Rivian of stealing trade secrets by recruiting former Tesla employees.
The case, initiated in 2020, alleged that Rivian encouraged new hires from Tesla to bring proprietary documents containing âhighly sensitive trade secret, confidential, and proprietary engineering information.â Rivian denied these claims. In 2021, Tesla expanded the lawsuit to allege Rivian was âstealing the core technology for its next-generation batteries.â
Tesla recently notified the court of a conditional settlement agreement. âTesla didnât disclose specifics about the agreement in a court filing, but told a California state judge that it expects to seek dismissal of the case by Dec. 24 upon satisfactory completion of the terms,â Bloomberg reported.
Neither Tesla nor Rivian has commented publicly on the settlement. While Tesla has emphasized the openness of its patents, the company has argued in this case that Rivianâs alleged actions were a targeted attempt to misappropriate critical technologies, a claim Rivian has steadfastly denied.
