President-elect Donald Trump announced that Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, will officially take on a leadership role in his administration. In a statement made on X, the social media platform Musk acquired two years ago, Trump shared that Musk, along with American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, will head the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Trump praised Musk’s qualifications, saying, “I am pleased to announce that the Great Elon Musk, working in conjunction with American Patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency. Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies — Essential to the ‘Save America’ Movement.”
In his own comments, Musk expressed enthusiasm for his new role, stating, “This will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in Government waste, which is a lot of people!”
Although discussions of a potential role for Musk in the Trump administration had previously been explored, his numerous business ventures seemed to preclude such an appointment. However, as the election drew nearer, it became clear that Musk’s involvement was moving forward. By September, Musk had been suggested to lead a Government Efficiency Commission, which appears to have evolved into the DOGE, potentially with a nod to the cryptocurrency Tesla accepts.
Musk and Ramaswamy, a former Republican candidate, are tasked with driving large-scale structural reforms within the federal government. According to the announcement, their work will conclude by July 4, 2026. DOGE will work closely with the White House and the Office of Management & Budget to reshape government operations and introduce an entrepreneurial approach not seen before in U.S. governance.
