Nio has denied previous reports regarding its plans to introduce a hybrid vehicle. However, a new report from Reuters has revealed that the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer intends to launch its first hybrid model in 2026, with sales targeted exclusively at international markets such as the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe, according to sources familiar with the situation.
The decision to develop a hybrid vehicle comes as Chinese companies face challenges in foreign markets, including trade barriers and delays in charging infrastructure rollout. To address these issues, Nio will create the extended-range hybrid under a sub-brand codenamed Firefly, following suggestions from its primary investor, Abu Dhabi-based CYVN Holdings. The investor believes that this strategy could enhance sales in regions where the infrastructure for widespread EV adoption is still developing.
The new hybrid model is slated for a late 2026 launch, with deliveries expected to begin in 2027. Notably, the vehicle will not be available for sale in China, as Nio plans to maintain its focus on battery-swappable EVs.
While Nio declined to provide further comments on the hybrid vehicle plan, the company stated that the Firefly brand would utilize pure EV technology, without elaborating on the specifics. On November 1, local media outlet Yicai reported that the Firefly would feature an extended-range hybrid powertrain, aligning with the anticipated 2026 launch.
However, Nio co-founder and president Qin Lihong refuted this report in a statement to local media outlet Cailian, asserting that the Firefly brand will be unveiled on Nio Day 2024 and will continue to prioritize chargeable, swappable, and upgradable pure electric technology.
