The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has unveiled plans to enhance the nation’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem by adding 110 new EV charging outlets. This initiative marks a significant step in the company’s commitment to decarbonizing Thailand and positioning itself as a leader in the EV charging market.
Building on its 50 years of experience in electricity supply and transmission system development, EGAT aims to increase its charging infrastructure from 211 outlets at the end of last year. Reports indicate that the company plans to deploy an additional 100 charging stations by next year.
Nissara Thammapala, director for innovative energy solution business management at EGAT, stated that the expansion is essential for the company to gain traction in the EV solution sector, asserting, “We believe the EV charging business is still a blue ocean market.”
This expansion comes in response to the growing number of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Thailand, which the Department of Land Transport reports to total 141,008 units. Furthermore, the Thai Industrial Standards Institute and the Energy Regulatory Commission are currently developing standards for EV chargers, while the Engineering Institute of Thailand is drafting guidelines for charger installation.
In addition to the increase in charging facilities, EGAT is focused on enhancing user experience with the introduction of a smartphone app that manages queues at charging stations and provides technical consultations for charging infrastructure. The company recently showcased its latest EV charging facilities at the Bangkok EV Expo 2024.
EGAT’s expansion of EV charging outlets signals a strategic move to scale its EV solution offerings in a market with growing competition from larger players.
