Kia has introduced the world’s first car accessory crafted from plastic recovered from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), in collaboration with The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organization focused on removing plastic from the world’s oceans. The initiative marks a significant step in Kia’s efforts to integrate sustainable materials into its products.

The accessory, a limited-edition trunk liner for the all-new Kia EV3, is made from 40% recycled ocean plastic extracted by The Ocean Cleanup. This trunk liner, featuring a ‘geometric wave’ pattern symbolizing the flow of marine debris, will be available in select markets to coincide with the launch of the EV3.

“We have been working with The Ocean Cleanup since 2022 to find innovative ways to transform plastic waste from the GPGP into durable, practical products,” said a Kia spokesperson. “This partnership is a key part of our mission to lead the transition to sustainable mobility solutions.”

Each trunk liner comes with a QR code providing customers with information about the product’s development and the partnership, as well as The Ocean Cleanup’s logo. Kia has committed to further integrating recycled materials across its future models, aiming to increase recycled plastic use to over 20% by 2030.
