Kia has announced plans to provide its EV6 and EV9 owners access to over 16,500 Tesla Superchargers starting January 15, 2025. The automaker will facilitate this integration with complimentary North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters for specific customers.
According to a press release from Kia America, the free NACS adapters will be available to those who purchased a 2024 or 2025 Kia EV6 or EV9 after September 4, 2024.
Owners of Kia EVs bought before this date, including the EV6, EV9, and Niro EV, will be able to purchase the NACS adapter at authorized Kia dealerships at a later time. Kia plans to begin delivering the free adapters in early 2025, although pricing details have yet to be disclosed. For reference, General Motors announced earlier this month that it would charge $225 for its own NACS to CCS1 adapter.
Kia will offer three types of NACS adapters: NACS to CCS1, CCS1 to NACS, and J1772 to NACS. The NACS to CCS1 adapter enables existing Kia EVs to utilize DC fast charging, while the CCS1 to NACS coupler allows NACS-equipped Kia EVs to charge at existing CCS DC chargers. The J1772 to NACS adapter will permit NACS-equipped Kia EVs to charge on existing Level 2 chargers.
Additionally, Kia is working on a software update set to roll out in early 2025, which will enhance the charging experience for EV owners through the Kia Access app. This update will enable drivers to search for available chargers, check their status, and make payments directly through the app or their vehicle’s infotainment system, streamlining the process at Supercharger stations.
