Tesla will rectify an issue affecting 1.68 million vehicles in China through an Over-the-Air Software Update, the State Administration for Market Regulation announced on Tuesday. The recall includes Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles built between October 2020 and July 2024.
The regulator specified that the issue pertains to the vehicles’ hoods, which could potentially unlatch and obstruct the driver’s view by covering the windshield. “An unlatched bonnet could obstruct the driver’s view of the road as the hood could open and cover the windshield,” the statement said.
The affected Model 3 and Model Y units were manufactured in China, while the Model S and Model X cars were built in the United States and exported to China. The problem will be addressed via a software update that requires an internet connection for the vehicles to download and apply the fix automatically.
This follows a similar recall in the United States last week, where Tesla remedied over 1.8 million vehicles with the same hood issue through an Over-the-Air update. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) noted that only 1 percent of the recalled vehicles were expected to actually exhibit the defect.
Tesla’s market in China remains highly competitive, with its electric vehicles being among the most sought-after in the sector. Despite the intense competition, Tesla maintains a strong relationship with the Chinese government, evidenced by a recent agreement to introduce the company’s Full Self-Driving technology in the country following a meeting between CEO Elon Musk and Chinese officials earlier this year.
