Rivian is gearing up to unveil a bidirectional electric vehicle charger, allowing R1T and R1S owners to power their homes using their vehicle’s battery, a capability long anticipated by enthusiasts.
Senior vice president of electrical hardware, Vidya Rajagopalan, announced during Rivian’s recent Investor Day presentation that the company is nearing the release of both the necessary software and the bidirectional charger itself.

“We will be announcing this later, but we will be offering a bidirectional charger that you can mount on the wall of your garage, or wherever you park your car, that can pair up with the first gen R1 or the new gen 2 version, and can actually be used as a vehicle-to-home charger,” Rajagopalan stated.
Rajagopalan highlighted that the new charger will deliver approximately 24kW of power, a capacity deemed sufficient for most residential needs. Additionally, Rivian plans to introduce a more affordable bidirectional charger tailored for the upcoming R2 model, supporting up to 11kW of power.
