BYD continued its strong performance in May, recording its second-highest sales ever with a total of 331,817 new energy vehicles (NEVs) sold. This marks a 38.13% increase from the same period last year and a 5.93% increase from April.
BYD’s focus on plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) has been a significant factor in its recent success. The company ceased production and sales of vehicles powered solely by internal combustion engines in March 2022, shifting its focus to PHEVs and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

In May, BYD’s passenger NEVs saw strong growth, with 330,488 units sold, up 38.23% year-on-year and 5.91% from April. The company’s commercial NEVs also performed well, with 1,329 units sold, up 17.82% year-on-year and 11.03% from April.
Among BYD’s passenger NEVs, PHEVs outperformed BEVs, reflecting the market’s greater acceptance of hybrid models. The company sold 146,395 passenger BEVs in May, up 22.40% year-on-year, and 184,093 passenger PHEVs, up 54.07% year-on-year and marking the third consecutive record high since March.

In overseas markets, BYD sold 37,499 vehicles in May, up 267.53% year-on-year but down 8.56% from April.
For the January-May period, BYD sold a total of 1,271,325 NEVs, up 26.8% year-on-year. Passenger NEVs accounted for 1,266,934 units, up 27.14% year-on-year, while commercial NEVs totaled 4,391 units, down 28.19%.
BYD’s focus on PHEVs is evident in its sales figures, with 580,974 passenger BEVs and 685,960 passenger PHEVs sold in the January-May period, up 18.9% and 35.07% year-on-year, respectively.

In overseas markets, BYD sold 176,409 vehicles in January-May, up 176.71% year-on-year.
BYD’s installed battery volume in January-May reached 56.454 GWh, up 16.56% year-on-year, showcasing the company’s commitment to the electric vehicle market.
