Pompano Beach, Florida, has taken a significant step towards sustainability with the introduction of its first all-electric Mack LR waste truck. The new truck, delivered last week, promises cleaner and quieter streets for the city, marking a milestone in its commitment to environmental stewardship.
The unveiling of the electric garbage truck, adorned in Coastal Waste & Recycling colors, took place at a local e-mobility event. The city sees this move as a pivotal moment in its sustainability efforts and a way to lead by example in driving positive change in the waste management industry.
Brendon Pantano, CEO of Coastal Waste & Recycling, expressed enthusiasm for the new truck, highlighting the collaboration with Mack Trucks and dealer network Nextran Truck Centers. Pantano emphasized the development of routes tailored for the LR Electric to ensure a full day’s work based on application needs.
According to Mack Trucks, Coastal Waste & Recycling is Florida’s first private waste hauler to adopt electric vehicles (EVs). The company also announced plans to pilot a Volvo CE EC230 Electric 23-ton excavator, further demonstrating its commitment to innovation in operations.

The Mack LR BEV garbage trucks are equipped with two 130 kW motors, generating a combined 496 peak horsepower, and feature 4 NMC lithium-ion batteries and a 600V electrical system. They offer up to 150 kW charge power with a maximum current of 200A over an SAE J1772/CCS plug, allowing for a full recharge in under two hours.
Pompano Beach’s adoption of electric waste trucks reflects a broader trend towards sustainability in the transportation sector, with cities and companies increasingly turning to EVs to reduce emissions and noise pollution.
