Germany’s Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV) has achieved a significant milestone in advancing electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. In a groundbreaking move, the BMDV has successfully completed the first tender for the Deutschlandnetz, Germany’s fast-charging network, which will see the construction and operation of approximately 900 charging locations equipped with nearly 8,000 new ultra-fast charging points for electric cars.
The selection process yielded contracts for ten distinguished companies:
- Allego GmbH
- BayWa Mobility Solutions GmbH
- E.ON Drive Infrastructure GmbH
- Eviny Elektrifisering AS
- Fastned Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG
- EWE Go HOCHTIEF Ladepartner GmbH & Co. KG
- Mer Germany GmbH
- Pfalzwerke AG
- Total Energies Marketing Germany GmbH
- Via Deutschlandnetz (VINCI Concessions Deutschland GmbH)
This monumental step forward in EV infrastructure aims to provide an extensive and reliable network of fast-charging options across Germany, further empowering individual mobility and enhancing the appeal of electric vehicles. Federal Minister Dr. Volker Wissing expressed his satisfaction, emphasizing the significance of the Deutschlandnetz in ensuring seamless fast charging access throughout the country.
“Individual mobility is a great asset in a free society. Therefore, I am pleased that we, as the Federal Ministry of Transport, are setting a milestone with the Deutschlandnetz, which ensures a reliably available range of fast charging options in Germany for users. With the Deutschlandnetz, we meaningfully and purposefully complement the expansion activities of the charging infrastructure operators. Simply fast charging without gaps on the charging map becomes a reality,” said Federal Minister Dr. Volker Wissing.
The BMDV’s strategy for the Deutschlandnetz encompasses the establishment of 900 strategically chosen charging locations to guarantee accessibility wherever EV users require charging infrastructure. These locations have been meticulously determined by the National Control Center Charging Infrastructure, taking into account the existing fast-charging network and the projected growth in the number of electric cars in the years to come.
With the allocation of these contracts, a crucial phase of the Deutschlandnetz tendering process is now complete. The final phase will involve the tender by the federal Autobahn GmbH for fast charging locations at 200 unmanaged motorway rest facilities. Once finalized, the Deutschlandnetz will encompass over 1,000 locations across Germany, ensuring that fast charging is readily available within minutes from virtually anywhere in the country. This initiative signifies a substantial leap forward in Germany’s commitment to EV infrastructure development.
