In an unexpected turn of events, BYD’s Atto 3 electric SUV claimed the title of the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in Sweden last month, surpassing well-known contenders like Volkswagen ID.4, Volvo models, and Tesla Model Y. The Chinese EV manufacturer’s sales continue to surge both in domestic and overseas markets, buoyed by the increasing demand for practical and budget-friendly electric vehicles.
In July, BYD achieved a remarkable milestone by setting a new monthly sales record for the third consecutive month, selling over 262,000 new energy vehicles. This impressive figure includes 134,783 all-electric vehicles, showcasing a remarkable 66% growth compared to the previous year and a notable 5% increase from June.
The automaker attributed much of its success to its Dynasty and Ocean brands, which collectively accounted for 249,959 sales in July, marking a substantial 54% increase. Additionally, the Denza brand recorded 11,146 sales during the same period.
BYD’s expansion isn’t limited to its domestic market, as the automaker has made significant strides in international markets as well. In July alone, BYD exported 18,169 vehicles, seizing the opportunity presented by the growing demand for affordable EVs in key auto markets worldwide.
Earlier this year, BYD introduced its most budget-friendly EV to the European market, the BYD Dolphin hatchback, which comes with a starting price of approximately 30,000 euros ($33,000). Additionally, the company expanded its North American presence by shipping its first batch of Yuan Plus EVs (known as Atto 3 in overseas markets) to customers in Mexico City and Guadalajara.
In Sweden, the Atto 3 outperformed renowned rivals such as Volkswagen ID.4, Skoda Enyaq, Tesla Model Y, Kia EV6, and Polestar 2. However, Tesla’s Model Y still retains its leading position in the country year-to-date, with 8,901 registrations, followed by Volvo XC 40, VW ID.4, and Polestar 2.
The success of the Atto 3 can be attributed to its utilization of BYD’s BladeBattery and a 150 kW electric motor, enabling an impressive range of approximately 261 miles (420 km) based on WLTP Combined standards.
BYD’s remarkable surge in July follows its achievement of surpassing Volkswagen in passenger car sales in China during the first quarter of the year, a momentum that has only grown stronger through July. The automaker’s consistent performance highlights its prominence in the EV market and positions it as a formidable competitor for other established players in the industry.
