In a surprising comeback, the renowned Triumph Motor Company has unveiled its latest creation after a four-decade hiatus from car manufacturing. Introducing the Triumph TR25, an awe-inspiring electric concept vehicle, the Makkina design house pays homage to the iconic Triumph TR2 MCV575 “Jabbeke” that made history in 1953.
Drawing inspiration from the TR2’s timeless design, the TR25 incorporates several distinctive styling cues. Notably, the front fascia boasts two headlights, with a prominent number 25 showcased in the center to commemorate Makkina’s 25th anniversary. While the concept maintains the minimalist essence of its predecessor, its exterior adopts a more angular aesthetic, featuring short overhangs, bold wheels, and sharp creases over the fenders.
Dominating the rear of the TR25 are slender vertical taillights that elegantly cut through the vehicle’s rear section, flanking the iconic Triumph word mark. The overall design ethos of the concept remains clean and straightforward, extending into the single-seat cabin. However, for those seeking a companion on their journeys, an optional flip-out jump seat is available.
In true minimalist fashion, Makkina has kept the interior features to a minimum. A simple binnacle positioned behind the steering wheel provides essential information such as battery range, road speed, and charge level. The spoked steering wheel pays tribute to the “Jabbeke” while incorporating modern technological advancements, including a self-centering dial that displays vital vehicle data. Moreover, the steering wheel grants the driver access to various drive modes and navigation functions.
Underneath its striking exterior, the TR25 rides on the esteemed BMW i3s platform. Through a collaboration between BMW, the owner of the Triumph Motor Company marque, and the Makkina design house, this visionary project has come to life. Powering the concept is an AC electric motor from the i3s, generating an impressive 181 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. The BMW i3s achieves a swift acceleration of 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 6.8 seconds. Although specific powertrain details of the TR25 remain undisclosed by Makkina, it shares its foundation with the renowned BMW i3s.
It is worth noting that BMW concluded the production of the i3 at the end of 2022, following the successful sale of 250,000 units of this exceptional electric/hybrid hatchback over a span of nearly nine years. As a symbolic farewell, BMW bid adieu to the model with a special ceremony featuring a gilded finish. The i3 gracefully exited the US market by the close of 2021.
The Triumph TR2 MVC575 “Jabbeke” achieved legendary status when it shattered the land speed record for production cars under 2.0 liters. This remarkable feat took place in May 1953, utilizing a pre-production prototype adorned with streamlined components. The vehicle featured an under shield, rear wing splats, and a metal cockpit cover, significantly enhancing its aerodynamics. Today, the original “Jabbeke” proudly resides at the esteemed British Motor Museum, a testament to its enduring legacy.
