In the realm of electric vehicles (EVs), Mercedes-Benz has been diligently working on their forthcoming all-electric SUV, the EQG. As automotive enthusiasts eagerly anticipate its official unveiling, a recent video has surfaced, showcasing the heavily camouflaged prototype during its ongoing testing phase.
Mercedes-Benz has taken great care to conceal specific design elements with a comprehensive camouflage wrap, including the grille and other distinguishing features. Nevertheless, the unmistakably boxy and iconic shape of the EQG, a distinctive characteristic that has resonated since its inception, remains visible beneath the coverings. Drawing inspiration from the EQG Concept, which made its grand debut at the esteemed 2021 Munich Motor Show, the production version is expected to stay true to the overall styling presented in the concept vehicle.
While the video doesn’t provide a clear view of the interior, if the concept serves as any indication, the cabin is likely to bear a striking resemblance to the current production G-Class. During a previous ride-along experience, Mercedes took precautions to conceal the interior, suggesting minimal changes to the G-Class’ interior layout. Enthusiasts can expect the familiar sight of twin 12.3-inch displays, serving as both the digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen, complementing the EQG’s advanced and connected driving experience.
Remaining faithful to its G-Class roots, the EQG will retain its sturdy ladder-frame chassis, now powered by four electric motors that propel each wheel. While the specific powertrain details remain undisclosed, early estimates suggest an impressive output ranging between 600 and 670 horsepower. The size of the battery pack, a vital component dictating range capabilities, remains shrouded in mystery; however, speculations suggest the EQG could offer up to an impressive 310 miles on a single charge, catering to the needs of discerning EV enthusiasts.

In a bid to further enhance the EQG’s range and charging capabilities, Mercedes will incorporate Sila Nanotechnologies’ revolutionary battery technology, aptly named Titan Silicon. This innovative battery material boasts a remarkable 20 percent increase in range while significantly improving charging speeds. Sila Nanotechnologies aspires to power one million electric vehicles with its cutting-edge battery technology by the year 2028, underscoring the immense potential of this collaboration.
As the EQG’s debut draws nearer, Mercedes is concurrently preparing to introduce a refreshed version of the traditional gas-powered G-Class. The two variants are expected to share certain fresh styling cues, both inside and out, catering to the diverse preferences of SUV enthusiasts.
Interestingly, there have been reports suggesting that Mercedes might forgo the “EQG” nomenclature for the electric G-Wagen. Allegedly, the German automaker plans to phase out the “EQ” branding, signifying a strategic shift in their approach to EVs. In the future, EVs will no longer be categorized as a sub-brand but will instead become the core product lineup. Nevertheless, the EQ branding will persist for other Mercedes products and services, including their EV charging network.

Although Mercedes has not officially announced the precise debut date for the EQG, industry experts anticipate an unveiling before the culmination of this year. However, prospective buyers might need to exercise patience, as the model is not expected to hit the market until late 2024, with U.S. sales potentially commencing even later. EV enthusiasts worldwide eagerly await the arrival of the Mercedes-Benz EQG, poised to combine the heritage of the iconic G-Class with the electrifying potential of zero-emission motoring.
