Jeep surprised many by sharing video footage of its Grand Cherokee 4xe undergoing testing of AI and autonomous off-road technology in Moab, Utah. While the brand may not be commonly associated with electric vehicles (EVs) or autonomous driving, Jeep’s strong connection with off-roading prompted them to prioritize the development of autonomous capabilities for rugged terrains rather than focusing solely on highways like many other automakers.
Jeep’s parent company, Stellantis, has been somewhat slower in embracing full battery-electric vehicle (BEV) adoption. However, the Jeep brand is steadily moving towards electrification, with plans to introduce four all-electric SUVs by 2025. Among these planned releases are the highly anticipated all-electric Wrangler, as well as the Avenger, Recon, and Wagoneer S.
For the autonomous off-road demonstration, Jeep equipped two Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in models with cutting-edge AI technology. These vehicles were put to the test, navigating the challenging and rocky red terrain of Moab, Utah.

Undoubtedly, this endeavor presents significant challenges. Nevertheless, Jeep’s unique approach to autonomous driving, aligning with its brand identity, focuses on enhancing off-road trail safety for both experienced off-roaders and those venturing into new territories off the beaten path.
Despite its initial emphasis on off-roading, Jeep envisions a future where its autonomous technology will support drivers on traditional paved roads as well. Christian Meunier, CEO of Jeep, emphasized the broader applications of their technology, stating:
“Just as our 4xe electrification elevates the off-road capabilities of the Jeep brand, these advanced off-road driving systems will enable more customers in various countries to join and enjoy the adventure. These features and technologies will have practical applications in a wide range of driving conditions, both on and off the trail.”
Jeep has announced its intention to release a comprehensive video showcasing the next generation of its autonomous off-road driving technology later this summer. In the meantime, the company has shared a brief vignette featuring Neda Cvijetic, the Head of AI & Autonomous Driving at Stellantis, offering a glimpse into their innovative developments in this field.
