Siro Commences Series Production at Gemlik Site, Plans to Expand to 20 GWh by 2031

Siro, a battery joint venture between Farasis Energy and Turkish electric vehicle manufacturer Togg, has commenced series production at its Gemlik site in Turkey. The plant has an annual capacity of 3 GWh and produces battery modules and packs based on Farasis’ technology. Siro plans to increase production capacity to 20 GWh annually by 2031, and will supply customers of Farasis Energy Europe as well as its own customers in the automotive, industrial applications, and stationary storage solutions sectors.

According to Farasis, the new plant was completed in just one and a half years, employs 300 people, and covers an area of 26,000 square metres. Siro began mass production on 31 March 2023. The partners are also constructing a research and development centre, including prototype production, in Bilisim Vadisi near Gebze, under the direction of the battery joint venture.

Gürcan Karakas, Chairman of Siro and CEO at Togg, said that research and development have a high priority at Siro because there are continuously new developments in battery technology, and they need to be close to the pulse of the time to offer their customers the best solutions possible. Togg and Farasis started initial production tests at the new battery site in August 2022. While earlier reports said that the initial focus would be on the assembly of modules and packs and that Siro would only produce cells later, the most recent press release makes no mention of such plans.

Togg inaugurated its first vehicle production facility in Gemlik in autumn. For the current year, Togg plans to produce 17,000 to 18,000 electric cars. Within five years, annual capacity is expected to grow to 175,000 vehicles. In March, the Turkish electric car manufacturer priced its first model in Turkey, with the entry-level T10X with rear-wheel drive starting at 953,000 Turkish Lira (about €45,000 or $49,000).

Siro’s battery production will help to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles and stationary energy storage solutions. As the automotive industry shifts towards electrification, battery technology is becoming increasingly crucial. Siro’s focus on research and development will ensure that it remains at the forefront of battery technology, providing customers with the best possible solutions.
