Blink Charging has secured a $7 million grant from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) auction proceeds. The grant, awarded by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU), and New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), will help bring electric ride-sharing to underserved communities in New Jersey. The initiative is part of the $70 million RGGI auction proceeds aimed at reducing the upfront costs of electric trucks, buses, and equipment in underserved neighborhoods.

The electric ride-sharing program aims to provide low- to moderate-income communities with access to reliable transportation, reduce greenhouse gas pollutants, and mitigate the effects of climate change. Blink Mobility, Blink Charging’s subsidiary, currently provides electric ride-sharing services in Los Angeles, serving over 40 locations with 100 EVs and 200 chargers. In 2022, Blink Mobility’s vehicle fleet grew by approximately 70%, while the average utilization rate nearly doubled compared to 2021. Total trips also increased by nearly 37% over the same period.

The success of Blink Mobility’s electric ride-sharing program in Los Angeles has prompted the company to expand its services in New Jersey. The grant will allow Blink to replicate its successful model in New Jersey, where transportation is the number one source of harmful greenhouse gases. The program will provide cleaner transportation to citizens who may not own their own vehicle, thereby reducing air pollutants and protecting the health of residents in environmental justice communities.

New Jersey Governor, Phil Murphy, announced the grant as part of his comprehensive approach to mitigate the effects of climate change by investing in programs that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and boost clean energy. The electric ride-sharing program is a significant effort towards achieving these goals and creating a cleaner, more sustainable future for all.
