Volkswagen Announces Debut of New Multivan California Camper Van in 2023 with Plug-In Hybrid Option

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has announced the introduction of a new California model this year, based on the Multivan and featuring a wide range of connected features. The new camper is part of the automaker’s plan to expand the California range, with the introduction of the “California Universe,” which will bring the latest automotive technology to the campsite.

Carsten Intra, CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, stated: “We want to expand the range around the business with our camping models—and thus offer our customers that special California feeling. These include digital services for the Cali Community, completely new services to complement the purchase of a vehicle, but also the show car presentation of the new California based on the Multivan. We are planning these for later in the year.”

The Multivan is the seventh-generation in VW’s line of Transporter vans, which moves from a van-specific chassis to the MQB architecture designed for cars like the Golf, but also suitable for commercial vehicles. The MQB platform could give the Multivan California a selling-point in the form of plug-in hybrid power, as the standard Multivan is offered with gas, diesel, and PHEV drivetrains.

“The new California based on the Multivan will offer a perfect combination of mobility and convenience,” said Intra. “The California model has long been a favourite for campervan enthusiasts, and with the introduction of the Multivan California, we believe we are offering an even more exciting and practical vehicle.”

While no other specific details have been released about the new Multivan California, the plug-in hybrid power option would certainly appeal to eco-conscious campers. The Multivan eHybrid combines a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing 215 hp (160 kW/218 PS) and offering drivers up to 82 miles (132 km) of all-electric range.

The Multivan California is expected to be available for purchase in 2024, but Volkswagen’s plans for its camper van range do not stop there. The company has announced plans to expand the lineup even further in 2025, with the introduction of the all-electric ID Buzz California, based on the long wheelbase variant of the van destined for the North American market.

“Volkswagen’s history in camper vans is long and proud, and we are excited to offer even more options for our customers,” said Intra. “We believe that the future of camping lies in offering high-tech, connected vehicles that are both environmentally friendly and practical. With the Multivan California and the forthcoming ID Buzz California, we believe we are well on our way to achieving that vision.”
