South Korean auto parts maker Hyundai Mobis Co. recently started supplying chassis modules for four Mercedes-Benz AG all-electric vehicle models assembled in the United States.
Hyundai Mobis becomes the first non-European chassis module supplier to the German automaker, the company said in a statement.
The company built a new module plant in Alabama near the Mercedes-Benz US plant and started production in July to supply chassis modules for four German clients’ pure electric SUVs.
Chassis module refers to a collection of parts that are installed under the car body, such as steering, braking and suspension systems. Hyundai Mobis did not provide the contract value and the name of the SUV model.
The company supplies chassis and other parts for vehicles assembled by Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Corp., Stellantis N.V. and Mercedes-Benz AG at their factories in the US.
At the North American International Auto Show held in September, Hyundai Mobis said it would explore new opportunities to sell electric complete chassis platform modules (eCCPM) for electric vehicles and other high-end car components to automakers in the region.
In the January-June period, the company received US$1.7 billion worth of spare parts orders in the US, reaching 45 percent of its global order target of US$3.75 billion for the year.
Hyundai Mobis is a core affiliate of the Hyundai Motor Group, which also has Hyundai Motor and Kia under its wings. Hyundai Mobis has a 21.43 percent stake in Hyundai Motor.
