Volkswagen and Mahindra Explore Cooperation to supply electric vehicle components

Volkswagen is exploring cooperation with Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd to supply electric vehicle components. The two companies are evaluating the scope of the collaboration and hope to finalize a supply agreement by the end of 2022, they said.

Mahindra itself is building the ‘Born Electric’ which is an electric vehicle platform. Mahindra plans to use components such as electric motors, battery system parts and battery cells from Volkswagen.

This collaboration comes at a time when the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is offering companies billions of dollars in incentives to build electric vehicles and their parts locally.

“Together with Mahindra, we want to make a significant contribution to India’s electrification,” said Thomas Schmall-von Westerholt, chief executive of Volkswagen Group Components.

For electric vehicle platforms, Volkswagen has developed its own platform, namely the modular electric drive matrix (MEB). The platform is used by Volkswagen itself and other brands under the Volkswagen group including Skoda and Audi.

Mahindra said the technology and supply from Volkswagen will be very meaningful to develop the Mahindra electric vehicle platform which the company will reveal soon.
