Scania and Canadian mining equipment manufacturer MacLean Engineering have entered into a strategic partnership under which Scania will supply battery systems for MacLean’s expanding range of battery-electric underground mining vehicles.
The agreement reflects growing demand for battery-electric equipment in the mining sector, where operators are increasingly adopting zero-emission alternatives to conventional diesel-powered machinery.

Scania Selected as Battery Supplier
Scania said it was chosen as MacLean’s preferred battery partner following a global evaluation process.
Under the partnership, Scania will provide its Core 800 battery packs for MacLean’s battery-electric vehicle platform. Each battery pack offers 97 kWh of capacity at a nominal voltage of 691 volts and incorporates an integrated thermal management system along with a battery management system.
The companies said the battery technology is intended to support a wide range of underground mining applications, including drilling rigs, loaders and other heavy-duty equipment.
Supporting Underground Mining Electrification
Scania said its industrial battery systems are already deployed in underground mining operations around the world.
According to the company, more than 2,000 battery systems are currently operating globally, supporting electric drivetrains ranging from 400 to 800 volts with scalable energy capacities between 21 kWh and 768 kWh.

The partnership with MacLean is expected to further expand the use of battery-electric equipment in underground mining, where operators are seeking to reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency and lower ventilation requirements associated with diesel-powered machinery.
