MG Motor is preparing to expand its premium electric vehicle offering in Europe with the launch of the IM5 sedan and IM6 sport utility vehicle in Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
The two battery-electric models, marketed under MG’s IM sub-brand, are scheduled to arrive in the four markets in July, following their initial European launch in the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland last year.
Pricing and detailed market-specific specifications have not yet been announced.
Premium EV Brand Expands European Presence
IM Motors was established in 2020 through a partnership between SAIC Motor, Alibaba and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech. The company began production of its first electric vehicles in China in 2022 before entering Europe in 2024 with a debut appearance at the Geneva Motor Show.
Sales of IM models started in the UK in July 2025 and were later expanded to Norway and Switzerland.
Rather than positioning IM Motors as a standalone brand in Europe, SAIC is marketing the vehicles as a premium sub-brand within the broader MG Motor portfolio.
The IM name stands for “Intelligence in Motion,” reflecting the brand’s focus on advanced software, battery technology, connectivity and driver-assistance systems.
“With IM, we are bringing cutting-edge vehicle technology to the German market. The MG IM5 and MG IM6 represent a new generation of intelligent electromobility and showcase the technical potential that MG holds,” said Oliver Rittierodt, Director of Sales at MG Motor Deutschland.
800-Volt Architecture and High-Power Charging
The IM5 sedan measures 4.93 meters in length, while the IM6 SUV is slightly shorter at 4.90 meters.
Both vehicles are built on an 800-volt electrical architecture, marking a departure from previous MG electric vehicle platforms.
According to MG Motor Deutschland, power outputs range from 300 kW to 553 kW depending on the variant.
The vehicles are equipped with a 100 kWh battery using nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) chemistry.
MG estimates driving ranges of up to 655 kilometers under the WLTP cycle, although final figures may vary by market and configuration.
In the UK, the IM5 is offered with a WLTP range of up to 710 kilometers, while the IM6 is rated for up to 625 kilometers.
Fast-Charging Capability
MG said the vehicles support charging rates exceeding 350 kW.
According to the company, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 17 minutes under suitable conditions.
Other European market specifications indicate peak DC charging power of up to 396 kW.
The company has not yet confirmed whether all variants available in Germany and other new markets will support the same charging performance.
Performance and Technology Features
In the UK market, the IM6 is available in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations.
The rear-wheel-drive version produces 300 kW, while the all-wheel-drive variant delivers 553 kW.
German market details remain limited, although MG has indicated that all-wheel-drive versions may initially be prioritized.
Among the advanced features highlighted by MG is rear-wheel steering, which reduces the turning circle of the IM5 to 9.98 meters in all-wheel-drive configurations.
The company also emphasized its suite of advanced driver-assistance systems and intelligent vehicle software designed to improve safety, comfort and connectivity.
Interior equipment includes a 26.3-inch display, a 50-watt wireless charging pad, a 20-speaker audio system, and electrically adjustable front seats with memory, ventilation and multiple adjustment settings.
Strengthening MG’s Premium EV Portfolio
The launch represents MG’s latest effort to move into higher-end segments of the European electric vehicle market.
While MG has built its reputation in Europe through competitively priced electric vehicles, the IM5 and IM6 place greater emphasis on charging performance, software capabilities, premium interior features and advanced driver-assistance technologies.
The final pricing strategy and variant lineup are expected to play a key role in determining how effectively the models compete against established premium electric vehicle offerings in Europe.
