Rivian has confirmed that deliveries of its highly anticipated R2 electric SUV will begin on June 9, marking a major milestone in the company’s efforts to expand beyond its premium R1 lineup and reach a broader customer base.
The R2 is widely viewed as a pivotal product for Rivian, offering a more affordable entry point into the brand’s electric vehicle portfolio while targeting significantly higher production volumes than the existing R1T pickup and R1S SUV.
Rivian’s Most Important Launch Yet
Founder and Chief Executive Officer RJ Scaringe has previously described the R2 as a critical vehicle for the company’s future growth.
“Maybe the most important thing we’ve launched to date.”
The automaker is counting on the new model to attract mainstream buyers and accelerate its path toward sustained profitability.
Pricing Starts Below $60,000
At launch, the R2 will be offered in a trim level priced just under $60,000. Rivian has already outlined plans to broaden the lineup with more affordable variants in the coming years.
The company expects to introduce a Standard version in 2027 with a starting price of $48,490. Rivian has also reiterated plans for an even lower-priced variant expected to start at around $45,000, a target price first highlighted when the R2 was unveiled in 2024.
The pricing strategy positions the R2 closer to the mainstream electric SUV market while maintaining Rivian’s focus on adventure-oriented design and technology.
Ambitious Production Targets
Rivian is aiming for a rapid production ramp-up following the start of deliveries. The company expects to deliver as many as 25,000 R2 SUVs by the end of 2026, making it one of the fastest vehicle launches in Rivian’s history.
The automaker believes the R2 will play a central role in expanding its customer base and increasing annual sales volumes.
Key to Rivian’s Profitability Plans
Beyond vehicle sales, the R2 is expected to be a cornerstone of Rivian’s long-term financial strategy. The company has yet to report an annual profit since its founding in 2009, and management sees the R2 and its future sibling, the R3 hatchback-inspired crossover, as essential to achieving sustainable profitability.
The R3, which is scheduled to follow the R2, will target an even broader segment of the market and is expected to further strengthen Rivian’s position in the increasingly competitive electric vehicle sector.
With deliveries set to begin on June 9, the R2 represents Rivian’s most significant product launch since the introduction of the R1T and R1S and could determine the company’s trajectory over the next several years.
