Germany has exceeded the two-million mark for battery-electric passenger cars, according to new data from the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA).
As of 1 January 2026, a total of 2,034,260 fully electric cars were registered nationwide. The milestone marks continued expansion of the country’s electric vehicle fleet, which has grown from 34,022 units in 2017 to more than two million within nine years. The one-million threshold was first crossed in 2023.

In 2025 alone, the battery-electric vehicle (BEV) fleet increased by 382,617 units, up from 1,651,643 vehicles at the beginning of the year. While that growth exceeded the increase recorded in 2024, it remained slightly below the expansion seen between 2023 and 2024. The net increase also suggests that a number of vehicles left the fleet during the year, as new BEV registrations reached a record 545,142 units in 2025.
Regionally, North Rhine-Westphalia has the largest stock of battery-electric cars at 454,783 vehicles, followed by Bavaria (395,271) and Baden-Württemberg (322,060). Lower Saxony and Hesse have also surpassed 100,000 units. In eastern states including Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, BEVs account for between 2.0% and 2.3% of the total passenger car fleet, below the shares recorded in Bremen (3.5%), Berlin (4.0%) and Hamburg (5.3%).

In a subsequent update published on 3 March 2026, the KBA confirmed that BEVs represent 4.1% of Germany’s total passenger car stock. The authority also reported 1,122,958 plug-in hybrids (2.3% share), reflecting year-on-year growth of 16.1%. Hybrid vehicles, including plug-in models, totalled 4,362,563 units, accounting for 8.8% of the fleet and marking a 22.6% increase.
Fuel cell vehicles remain marginal, with 1,575 units registered, a 12.6% decline year on year.
Across all powertrains, Germany has approximately 49.5 million registered passenger cars within a total motor vehicle fleet of 61.3 million. Petrol vehicles remain dominant at 29.3 million units (59.3% share), though their number fell by 1.9% compared to the previous year. Diesel cars declined by 3.2% to 13.4 million units, representing 27.0% of the fleet.

While combustion engine vehicles continue to account for the majority of cars on German roads, electrified powertrains are steadily increasing their share of the overall vehicle stock.
