Kia unveiled the EV5 WKNDR concept at the Guangzhou Auto Show, showcasing a rugged, adventure-oriented interpretation of its electric SUV platform aimed at blending urban driving with off-road and outdoor utility.
The concept was developed entirely by the Kia Design China team and is positioned as an exploration-focused variant of the EV5, featuring increased ground clearance, extended wheel arches and all-terrain tyres. Kia said the study reflects its “Opposites United” design philosophy, combining structural robustness with refined, lightweight styling.
Externally, the EV5 WKNDR includes retractable front and rear tow hooks, protective body cladding and a panoramic roof rack designed to carry traction boards and outdoor gear. A side-window pegboard allows tools to be mounted outside the vehicle, while a functional front hood board integrates an action camera for recording driver-perspective footage. The concept also features a model-specific lighting signature, a reinterpreted Tiger Nose grille and a geometric bumper finished in gunmetal trim.
Inside, Kia has configured the cabin around a modular and flexible layout intended to function as a mobile basecamp. The interior incorporates rotatable, ventilated seats and a centre console with a rotating armrest that houses a walkie-talkie cradle and an anti-insect camping lamp. A detachable jump seat can be used outside the vehicle, while the trunk cover doubles as a portable table.
The colour, materials and finish strategy uses bio-based polyurethane materials derived from corn and lightweight 3D knit fabrics, with a “Spruce Blue” and “Citrus Green” palette designed to echo natural environments. A slidable digital display with a flat-art human-machine interface presents key telemetry such as battery level and driving range in a simplified format.
To extend its outdoor capability, the EV5 WKNDR is also equipped with a detachable trailer system that can be configured as a mobile kitchen, equipment carrier or a base for drone-assisted climbing activities, Kia said.
Kia did not disclose technical specifications such as battery size, power output or production intent, indicating that the EV5 WKNDR remains a design-led concept. The unveiling comes as global automakers increasingly explore lifestyle-focused electric vehicles to appeal to outdoor and adventure-oriented consumers.
