Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has been named a Top Innovator in the Digital category of the CLEPA Innovation Awards for its UltraSonic Clearing Device (USCD), a system designed to maintain the performance of advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) cameras and sensors in challenging weather conditions. In recognition of the award, Murata said the technology “helps ensure visibility and reliability without relying on conventional cleaning hardware,” according to the original announcement.
The USCD uses ultrasonic vibrations to disperse water and remove debris, fog, ice and snow from sensor surfaces. The company says the vibration generates heat along the outer lens, helping eliminate condensation and preventing frost formation in cold climates. CLEPA — the European Association of Automotive Suppliers — highlighted the system’s potential to enhance vehicle safety as weather-related limitations continue to affect modern driver-assistance systems.
Murata’s approach differs from traditional spray-based solutions that require water tanks, plumbing, and consumable fluids. The system also avoids the use of heaters and air blowers, which typically add weight and increase energy consumption. By removing auxiliary hardware and simplifying wiring, the company says the technology may reduce vehicle complexity, lower maintenance requirements and potentially extend the driving range of electric vehicles.
The CLEPA Innovation Awards evaluate technologies based on technical advancement and the expected industry impact. Murata received the distinction while the USCD remains under development, with specifications and physical design subject to change before commercialisation. CLEPA represents automotive suppliers across Europe and aims to promote innovation across the sector.
