WattHub has opened a new public high-power charging hub for heavy commercial vehicles at Maasvlakte in the Port of Rotterdam, the Dutch company said on Thursday. The site uses charging hardware from Kempower and operating technology from Virta, which manages the hub around the clock through a reservation system with flexible tariffs.
The 5,000-square-metre facility is designed for trucks and off-highway vehicles operating in and around Europe’s largest port. In its initial phase, the hub includes 30 Kempower charging points rated at 400 kW and five additional points at 250 kW. Gerben van den Berg, CEO of WattHub, said the location is intended to support companies preparing for tighter emissions rules. “We see the Maasvlakte site as a major enabler for zero-emission logistics and construction,” he said. “It supports port drayage, urban logistics and nearby zero-emission worksites, helping fleets comply with zero-emission city-logistics zones rolling out from 1 January 2025.”
Virta described the site as a flagship project for heavy-duty vehicle charging, saying it will help fleets in and around the Port of Rotterdam accelerate efforts to electrify operations. The Maasvlakte hub is WattHub’s second heavy-duty charging facility in the Netherlands, following a site opened in October 2023 in Gelderland with TSG Netherlands. Together, the two hubs cover a key freight corridor linking the Netherlands with Germany, the UK and wider European markets. Both facilities are powered exclusively by renewable energy.
