Rivian Automotive Inc plans to launch a smaller, more affordable SUV, the R2, in the first half of 2026, as the electric vehicle maker seeks to broaden its lineup and expand beyond North America. The company aims to position the R2 as both a volume-builder and a step toward international relevance.
Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe told Autocar at the Munich motor show that the upcoming R2 and future R3 models are “highly aspirational but highly attainable,” blending pricing accessibility with desirability. “Often, when you see the price go down, you see the desirability drop off. But this is what makes our R2 and R3 so interesting: they’re inviting and attainable in their pricing, but they still feel very special,” he said.

The R2 is expected to start at around $45,000 in the United States, and will utilize Rivian’s new midsize platform with single-, dual-, and tri-motor configurations. A European launch is planned after the U.S. debut, with prices anticipated between €40,000 and €50,000, while the smaller R3 is expected to be priced slightly lower. The company has identified the United Kingdom as one of its initial target markets in Europe.
Production of the R2 will be split between a new multi-billion-dollar facility in Georgia and an expanded line at Rivian’s existing plant in Normal, Illinois. A European launch will also require Rivian to produce right-hand drive vehicles, necessitating modifications to its factory tooling.

Rivian currently offers only two models—the R1S SUV and the R1T pickup—which are limited to North America. The company has faced challenges with sales and production, making the success of the R2 and R3 critical for its long-term growth and international expansion.
