Smart has confirmed it is developing a next-generation ForTwo, set to debut in late 2026 as the Smart #2, while denying reports of a four-door model that would have revived the ForFour nameplate.
Speculation about a new Smart #4 surfaced after Autocar reported comments from Smart Europe CEO Dirk Adelmann during the Munich Motor Show, suggesting a model that “needs to look like a successor” to the last ForFour. That car ended production in 2021 after sharing its platform with the Renault Twingo.

Smart quickly moved to clarify the situation. “I’m afraid the information in the Autocar report was incorrect. While we appreciate the interest in Smart and our products, there are currently no plans to develop a ForFour successor or a #4,” Smart’s Global PR Director Jack Bailey told CarScoops.
Unlike Smart’s recent Geely-engineered models, the #2 is being developed in Europe on a platform created with Mercedes. Adelmann previously said this was “very important because this team makes sure that we have a European product that is ready for European customers,” .

The #2 will join the brand’s existing lineup of the #1, #3, and #5 models, while Smart prepares updates for its crossovers in 2026 followed by facelifts in 2027. Industry reports have also pointed to a possible #6 sedan, in line with the company’s even-odd naming scheme separating cars and SUVs.
