Mercedes-Benz has commenced pre-series production of its all-electric VLE at the Vitoria plant in Spain, marking a key step toward full-scale production planned for the first half of 2026. The move reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to expand its electric vehicle offerings while maintaining high-quality standards and versatile van capabilities.
The Vitoria plant, a central hub in Mercedes-Benz Vans’ global production network, has undergone extensive modernization to support the new Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA). Upgrades include a flexible bodyshop, a fully adaptable paint shop, and an updated assembly hall, all enhanced by artificial intelligence and digital tools such as a digital twin of production. The introduction of the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) in van manufacturing further underlines the plant’s technological advancements.
Sustainability is a core focus, with the facility operating net carbon-neutral production. Renewable energy has been in use since 2013, complemented by a photovoltaic system, geothermal heating, and waste heat recovery from painting processes. Workforce readiness has been emphasized, with around 5,000 employees completing more than 160 training programs covering new IT standards, materials, and manufacturing technologies.
The VLE is designed to combine sedan-like handling with multipurpose versatility, accommodating up to eight passengers for families, shuttle services, and active lifestyles. Development milestones include record-setting aerodynamics, performance testing at Italy’s Nardò track, and Arctic winter reliability trials. Efficiency has also been demonstrated through a Stuttgart-to-Rome journey requiring only two 15-minute charging stops.
Operational since 1954 and spanning 665,000 m², the Vitoria plant is set to produce both electric and combustion-engine vans from 2026 onward. Bernd Krottmayer, Head of the Vitoria Plant, described the VLE as “launching a new era,” highlighting the team’s adaptability and focus on innovation.
