Mercury Insurance, one of California’s largest auto insurers, has released its annual ranking of the most affordable electric vehicles (EVs) to insure for the 2025 and 2026 model years. Now in its 10th year, the list is designed to guide budget-conscious consumers as they weigh insurance costs alongside other expenses in the transition to EVs.
The list places the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, and Nissan Leaf among the most cost-effective EVs to insure. Other models included are the Kia Niro EV, Ford F-150 Lightning, Hyundai Kona EV, MINI Cooper SE, Hyundai Ioniq EV, Fiat 500e, and the Subaru Solterra/Toyota bZ4X.
Mercury said insurance costs are determined by several factors, including claims history, repair expenses, and overall vehicle safety records. “Choosing an EV from this list can help drivers save on insurance costs, which adds to the lower operating expenses EVs already offer compared to traditional gas-powered vehicles,” said Chong Gao, Director of Product Management R&D at Mercury Insurance.
The insurer noted that Hyundai Motor Group and General Motors had strong showings, with three Hyundai models and two GM vehicles making the top ten. With U.S. federal EV tax credits scheduled to phase out, Mercury said lower insurance premiums could help offset the total cost of ownership for buyers.
Founded more than 60 years ago, Mercury Insurance said its ranking provides both competitive rate guidance and a benchmark for consumers considering EV ownership at a time when the pace of electrification in the auto industry remains slower than initially projected.
