Tata Motors has signed a memorandum of understanding with Green Energy Mobility Solutions (GEMS) to supply 100 units of its Magna EV electric coach. The deal was finalised during the Passenger Vehicle Expo 2.0 in Chennai, with deliveries set to expand GEMS’ electric bus fleet managed under its parent company, Universal Bus Services (UBS).
The Magna EV is a 12‑metre intercity coach powered by a 250 kW motor and available with customisable battery packs that provide a range of up to 300 kilometres. The vehicle accommodates 44 passengers in a 2×2 seating layout and offers features such as USB charging ports, seat‑back hooks, and integrated bottle holders. Tata Motors said the bus is capable of reaching 85 kph, handling gradients of up to 17 degrees, and comes with rear air suspension as standard, with an optional front air suspension for improved ride comfort.
“This MoU marks a significant milestone as we transition to electric intercity travel with the Magna EV coaches,” said Sunil Kumar Ravindran, managing partner at UBS and director of GEMS. “With reduced operating costs and zero emissions, this fleet will not only boost our efficiency but also reinforce our commitment to sustainable mobility.”
In addition to Tata’s supply deal, GEMS signed a separate agreement with Electrigo to lease 50 electric buses, with the first ten units already ordered. Tata Motors, India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, has more than 3,600 electric buses operating across 11 cities. The fleet has collectively logged over 340 million kilometres and maintains uptime above 95%, underscoring reliability in public transport operations.
