InstaVolt has secured a 40-year lease to construct a major ultra-rapid charging hub on the A303 in Wiltshire, with 30 charge points, large-scale solar generation, battery storage, and retail services. The site, located in Cricklade on the Fonthill Estate, is set to open in spring 2026.
Designed to serve the A303 corridor — a key route in the UK’s Strategic Road Network — the site aims to offer high-capacity charging alongside sustainable energy generation and convenient amenities. The government and National Highways have recently prioritised the A303 for improved EV infrastructure, including updated signage to increase visibility and awareness of available charging stations.
“This peaceful stop will become a vital charging destination along the A303 – a very popular and busy route – powered by the latest in renewable energy innovation,” said InstaVolt CEO Delvin Lane. “With 30 ultra-rapid chargers and an on-site farm shop and café, Chicklade is the next step in our mission to combine scale, sustainability and convenience.”
The Cricklade hub follows InstaVolt’s established model, similar to its Winchester Superhub, which integrates on-site solar farms and 4 MW of battery storage to support energy supply. That project, which launched in March, enabled drivers to benefit from discounted charging rates, with prices as low as 50p per kWh during periods of surplus renewable energy.
The new site will adopt a similar configuration, with solar panels, energy storage and grid integration designed to maintain consistent charging performance and reduce reliance on peak-time grid electricity.
Planning permission and a grid connection are already secured, with construction due to begin next month. InstaVolt has worked closely with the Fonthill Estate and its advisors over the past two years to bring the project to its current stage.
The development is expected to play a significant role in strengthening EV infrastructure in southern England while contributing to national sustainability and net-zero targets.
