Kinchbus, a Leicestershire-based bus operator, has ordered a new batch of electric single-decker buses from Chinese manufacturer Yutong to serve routes in Loughborough. The order, placed through UK supplier Pelican Bus and Coach, includes a mix of E9L midi and E12 full-size models, with deliveries expected to begin in the third quarter of 2025.
The purchase is being part-funded through Leicestershire County Council’s successful bid in the second round of the UK government’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) scheme. The initiative is aimed at accelerating the transition to low-emission public transport across the country.
“This significant investment underscores our commitment to providing high-quality, sustainable public transport and that the new buses play a key part in the Kinchbus decarbonisation strategy,” said Kinchbus Managing Director Tom Morgan. “Our drivers and engineers are excited to work with these cutting-edge technologies, which will futureproof their skills and place them at the forefront of the green transport revolution.”
The buses will feature specifications tailored to Kinchbus’ needs, including double-glazed windows, cantilever seating, and other passenger-focused elements. The interiors are being developed in collaboration with design partners Camira and Altro, with an emphasis on accessibility for passengers with disabilities and neurodivergent sensitivities.
The latest order brings parent company Wellglade Group’s total number of Yutong vehicles to 42, including 12 diesel coaches operated by its Trentbarton subsidiary. In total, the group has invested more than £13 million in Yutong vehicles through Pelican Bus and Coach.
