Rivian, the electric vehicle startup, made waves with the recent unveiling of its upcoming electric vehicle, the R2. While the R2 won’t hit the roads until 2026, Rivian has already captured attention with its bold promises regarding range, price, and design.

During the reveal event, the R2 showcased several major highlights, such as a powered rear window, dual glove compartments, and fully foldable seats. However, there are several lesser-known features of the R2 that deserve recognition.

Portable USB-C Charger

The R2 will come equipped with a portable USB-C charger housed in the passenger-side door. This charger not only charges your devices but also doubles as a hand warmer with the press of a button. It automatically recharges once returned to its dock.

Heat Pump

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe confirmed that the R2 will feature a heat pump, improving cabin heating efficiency compared to the R1 models that use resistive heating. This feature will be particularly beneficial for customers in colder climates, reducing battery drain for heating.

Red Light Camp Mode

The R2’s Camp Mode sets the display to all-red, providing a gentle light that won’t disturb your sleep or blind you at night. This feature enhances the camping experience for R2 owners.

Flip-Out Shelf

Located beneath the powered rear window, the flip-out shelf provides additional functionality. It can serve as a nightstand during car camping or a mini table for morning coffee.

Slide-Out Table

The R2’s cargo floor can be slid out to create a larger table, doubling as a tailgating accessory. It is sturdy enough to support various activities, including use as a baby changing station.

Rear Accessory Ports

The R2 features rear accessory ports for attachments like the Travel Kitchen or Bike Rack. These ports snap accessories into place without requiring tools, offering convenience for R2 owners.
