In a bid to cater to the increasing mobility demands in the Central Ohio region, the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) has placed an order for 26 battery-electric Xcelsior Charge NG 40-foot transit buses with New Flyer, a leading bus manufacturer in the USA.

This latest order comes as a continuation of COTA’s commitment to embracing sustainable transportation solutions. In January of the current year, COTA had announced its purchase of 14 battery-electric buses (BEV). Prior to that, in May 2022, they had already acquired eight Xcelsior Charge NG transit buses.

The recent orders form a vital part of COTA’s larger goal to achieve a fully zero-emission bus fleet by 2035 and reach net zero carbon emissions by 2045. According to Andy Biesterveld, Chief Engineering and Mechanical Officer, COTA is making steady progress toward becoming a diesel-free fleet by 2025 and eventually transitioning into a completely zero-emission fixed-route fleet by 2035.

New Flyer has designed the new electric buses for COTA with 520 kWh batteries, which are expected to deliver enhanced energy efficiency and provide longer-range capabilities. This move reflects New Flyer’s dedication to promoting sustainable transport solutions across North America.

Beyond its engagement with COTA, New Flyer has also ventured into the Canadian market. Last month, the company signed a framework agreement with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to supply up to 621 battery-powered buses. TTC had already ordered 186 units of the same electric bus model, the Xcelsior Charge NG.

The company boasts a diverse range of zero-emission battery and fuel cell electric buses and coaches, with its vehicles having accumulated an impressive 115 million EV service miles.

With these recent developments, New Flyer continues to reinforce its commitment to creating a cleaner and more sustainable future for public transportation systems globally. As cities strive to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change, electric buses have emerged as a key solution to meet these environmental goals.
