Lucid Motors, the California-based electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is gearing up for a head-to-head competition with European luxury car giants Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW on their home turf. The company has inaugurated a new EV retail studio in the heart of Düsseldorf, Germany, located on the renowned Königsallee, a prestigious shopping boulevard synonymous with flagship luxury brands such as Prada, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton.
This marks Lucid's second retail location in Germany and its fifth in Europe, demonstrating the brand's commitment to expanding its presence overseas. Zak Edson, Vice President of Sales and Service at Lucid, expressed enthusiasm about the venture, stating, “As ‘a country with a passion for cars,' we are delighted to open our second studio in Germany.”
Lucid's foray into the European market follows a warm reception at the debut of its inaugural store in Munich. This positive reception confirmed that German customers are ready to embrace Lucid's luxury EV offerings.
The centerpiece of Lucid's European expansion is the Autobahn-tuned Lucid Air, boasting exceptional range, distinctive design, impressive performance, and rapid charging capabilities. With a WLTP range of up to 518 miles (833 km), the Lucid Air can travel from Amsterdam to Berlin on a single charge. Moreover, Lucid's proprietary EV technology enables a substantial gain of up to 248 miles (400 km) in just 15 minutes of fast charging.
In terms of performance, the Lucid Air stands toe-to-toe, if not ahead, of its competitors, offering a choice between single- or dual-motor configurations with power outputs of up to 1,126 hp (828 kW). This translates into a remarkable acceleration from 0 to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in a mere 2.7 seconds.
Lucid made its debut in the German market by delivering the first Air electric sedans in December of the previous year. The pricing of Lucid's offerings in Germany includes the Air Pure starting at EUR 109,000 ($115,200), with other trims such as the Touring at $136,300, the Grand Touring at $168,000, and the fully equipped Dream Edition at $230,300.
Comparatively, Porsche's Taycan, considered a direct competitor to the Lucid Air, starts at EUR 93,139 ($98,400) for the base model. Porsche's Taycan lineup includes models such as the Taycan 4S ($121,000), GTS ($148,000), and Turbo ($174,000). In terms of performance, the base Lucid Air Pure boasts 42 more horsepower than the Taycan 4S, which is closest in pricing, with both models claiming a 0 to 62 mph acceleration in 4 seconds.
Where Lucid truly shines is in the realm of range, with the base Lucid Air offering up to 450 miles (725 km) of WLTP range, significantly surpassing the base Taycan, which offers up to 275 miles (443 km) of range, and the Taycan S with up to 281 miles (452 km) of WLTP range.
Both the Lucid Air and Porsche Taycan feature premium, technology-focused interiors with spacious layouts and an array of advanced features. Lucid Motors' expansion into Europe signifies a new player in the luxury EV market, poised to challenge the established European giants on their own turf.
