In the ever-evolving landscape of electric vehicles, Lamborghini, renowned for its visceral supercars, is on a mission to maintain the emotional essence of driving through authentic sounds. In a recent interview with The Drive, Lamborghini's Chief Technical Officer, Rouven Mohr, revealed the company's commitment to crafting an unmistakable auditory experience for its electric vehicle (EV) lineup.

Sound has always been a defining feature of supercars, not limited to just Lamborghinis. However, the shift to electric propulsion has ushered in a hushed era, prompting questions about the future of automotive acoustics. Mohr shared insights into how Lamborghini plans to address this challenge, emphasizing a desire to avoid entirely synthetic noises in their EVs.

Expressing his reservations about fully artificial sounds, Mohr articulated, “You feel a decoupling between what the car is doing and what the sound is suggesting that the car is doing.” Lamborghini, therefore, regards sound as a critical aspect of its EV production cars, striving to create a seamless connection between the vehicle's performance and its auditory feedback.

Mohr acknowledged the ongoing pursuit of the “perfect sound” for their EVs, highlighting the presence of various ideas and proposals within the company. However, no definitive decisions have been made regarding the final production sound.

The challenge of generating authentic sound from near-silent electric drivetrains is being met through a combination of amplification and correlation techniques. Mohr explained that Lamborghini is experimenting with extracting frequencies from the electric motors, amplifying specific elements, and eliminating others, all while closely aligning the resulting sound with the drivetrain's condition.

Intriguingly, Mohr drew a parallel between this amplified approach and the way traditional internal combustion engines are fine-tuned to produce distinctive exhaust notes. He emphasized that the core sound originates from something genuine, even if it's subsequently shaped for a desired effect.

While the meticulous tuning of exhaust notes is often associated with performance-focused brands and aftermarket manufacturers, Lamborghini's endeavor to craft an authentic EV sound promises an intriguing auditory journey. Whether it can rival the sonorous symphonies of traditional V12 supercars remains uncertain, but enthusiasts and experts eagerly await the sonic signature of Lamborghini's electric future.
